Materials
Hammer
Screws
Ziplock Bag
Wood (Cut to 3ft long)
Disposable Gloves (optional)
Letters (see below)
Scissors
Blue Tape
Chalk
Step 1: Purchase the Wood
First, you’ll want to purchase the wood. I had to purchase an 8ft x 8in x 1in board and cut it down to be 3ft x 8in x 1in.
Step 2: Distress the Wood
Now comes the fun part. Gather your supplies (hammer, screws, ziplock, sandpaper, and straight edge, such as a nail) and get ready. First, grab your sandpaper and get started by sanding around all four edges of the wood.
Next place your screws into a gallon size ziplock bag. Start by dropping the bag of screws repeatedly onto the wood to create small dents.
Then grab your hammer and make a few larger dents. Grab something with a straight line such as a nail or tool and hammer it down to make a straight line indent.
Next, grab a screw and drag it along, or hammer it on its side. Then hammer the screw tip into the wood to make a nail hole.
Lastly, hammer a few dents along the edge of the wood to give the edges some character.
Hopefully, you feel a little de-stressed and your wood a little distressed. Sorry for the pun I just had to do it!
Step 3: Stain the Wood
You might want to wear disposable gloves for this part it can get a little messy. First, brush the stain onto the wood.
Then set a timer for 10 minutes and then with a clean rag wipe the excess stain off. If you want the stain color to appear darker simply add more stain to the area you removed and set your timer for a few more minutes. Once the stain is the color you like then remove all of the excess stain. Let the wood dry completely before moving on to step five.
Step 4: Print and Cut Letters
Next, print and cut out all of the letters.
Step 5: Tape down the Letters
Once the wood is dry completely take the cut out letters and add tape to the back of the letters. Then place the letters on the wood spacing out the letters as you like.
Step 6: Trace the Letters
Next trace the letters with white chalk. Then remove the letters.
Step 7: Trace and Fill in the Letters
Grab your paint marker and trace the chalk outline. Then take your paint marker and fill in all the letters.
Step 8: Add Sawtooth Picture Hangers to Wood
Lastly, add sawtooth picture hangers to easily hang your laundry room farmhouse decor sign.
